- What is Lab Grown Diamond
The differences between a natural and a lab grown diamond stem from how they were made. Lab grown diamonds are man-made in a lab while natural diamonds are created in the earth.
The first successful synthetic diamonds were made by mimicking nature with High Pressure/High Temperature (HPHT) manufacturing. There are three basic manufacturing processes used to make HPHT diamonds: the belt press, the cubic press, and the split-sphere (BARS) press. The goal of each process is to create an environment of extremely high pressure and temperature where diamond growth can occur. Each process starts with a small diamond seed which is placed in carbon and put under very high pressure and temperature to grow the diamond.
Another popular method of growing synthetic diamnd is chemical vapor deposition(CVD). The growth occurs under low pressure(below atmospheric pressure). It involves feeding a mixture of gases(typically 1 to 99 methane to hydrogen) into a chamver and splitting them to chemically active radicals in a plasma ignited by microwaves, hot filament, arcdischarge, welding torch or laser. This method is mostly used for coatings, but can also produce single crystals several millimeters in size.
